Tanjungpinang Inflation – August 2025

Tanjungpinang, (1/9) – BPS-Statistics Tanjungpinang Municipality released the August 2025 inflation update. Based on field price monitoring, Tanjungpinang City recorded an annual (year-on-year/y-on-y) inflation rate of 1.23 percent, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) recorded at 106.08. This figure indicates an increase compared to August 2024, which stood at 104.79. In addition to the annual figure, inflation was also observed over shorter periods. On a month-to-month (m-to-m) basis, August 2025 inflation stood at 0.26 percent compared to the previous month. Meanwhile, on a year-to-date (y-to-d) basis, from January to August 2025, Tanjungpinang City recorded inflation of 0.33 percent.

This development confirms that the pace of inflation throughout the year remains under control, despite price movements in several key commodities. Annual Inflation Trends The annual inflation increase of 1.23 percent was influenced by several expenditure groups. The food, beverages, and tobacco group was the largest contributor with 0.67 percent.

Rising prices of food items such as tuna, anchovy, cooking oil, as well as vegetables such as chili and long beans drove inflation in this group. In addition, the cigarettes and tobacco group also contributed significantly through the increase in machine-rolled kretek cigarette (SKM) prices. Another group contributing to annual inflation was personal care and other services, with a share of 0.55 percent. Price increases in various personal care products and household services, including social protection and personal services, strengthened the inflation rate in this group. Meanwhile, the transportation group contributed 0.26 percent, mainly driven by airfares, rising motor vehicle prices, and shipping service charges. Price increases were also recorded in the education group by 2.61 percent with a contribution of 0.11 percent. This condition coincided with the new school year, when tuition fees from elementary to secondary school rose. The housing, water, electricity, and household fuels group also increased by 0.65 percent with a contribution of 0.10 percent, influenced by rising house rents and residential maintenance services. In addition, the health, recreation, sports and culture, and restaurants groups also recorded price increases, though relatively small. On the other hand, some groups experienced price declines. Clothing and footwear experienced significant deflation of 12.30 percent, mainly due to falling prices of children’s shoes, women’s shoes, and men’s casual wear. The household equipment group also recorded a decline of 0.39 percent, while the information, communication, and financial services group fell slightly by 0.12 percent. Monthly Inflation Trends Compared to July 2025, monthly inflation in August 2025 was recorded at 0.26 percent. Monthly inflation was mainly influenced by price increases in the food, beverages, and tobacco group, which rose 1.09 percent. Some food commodities with the largest contributions were red chili, tuna, broiler chicken meat, selar fish, long beans, shallots, and water spinach. In addition to food, the education group also contributed to monthly inflation, along with rising tuition fees for elementary, junior high, and senior high schools. This increase is normal as it coincides with the start of the new school year. The housing and household equipment groups also contributed to monthly inflation, influenced by higher prices of building materials such as wall paint and other household needs. However, there were also groups that experienced deflation. The clothing and footwear group fell by 0.74 percent, mainly influenced by falling prices of children’s and women’s shoes. The transportation group recorded deflation of 0.26 percent due to declining airfares and fuel prices. The personal care and other services group also fell by 0.13 percent, mainly due to lower prices of perfume, disposable baby diapers, and body care products. Other commodities contributing to monthly deflation included rice, bird’s eye chili, mustard greens, fresh coconut milk, tomatoes, and broiler chicken eggs. Thus, the monthly inflation pattern in Tanjungpinang in August 2025 was still strongly influenced by fluctuations in food prices and transportation fares. Commodities Contributing to Inflation and Deflation Several commodities were dominant factors contributing to annual inflation in Tanjungpinang. Among them were gold jewelry, fresh coconut milk, machine-rolled kretek cigarettes, airfares, house rents, cooking oil, tuna, anchovy, cars, and ground coffee. These commodities experienced significant price increases, contributing to the inflation rate over the past year. For example, the increase in gold jewelry prices reflects global trends that also affect the local market. On the other hand, there were also commodities that contributed to deflation. Some of them were red chili, bird’s eye chili, men’s t-shirts, women’s leather sandals, children’s shoes, women’s shoes, men’s jeans, tamban fish, men’s cotton long-sleeve shirts, and toddler powdered milk. The price decline of red chili and bird’s eye chili was significant enough to curb further inflation. Falling prices of clothing and footwear also reinforced the deflation trend in this group. For monthly inflation, the main contributing commodities in August 2025 included sea transportation fares, red chili, tuna, broiler chicken meat, selar fish, machine-rolled kretek cigarettes, long beans, beef, shallots, and water spinach. Meanwhile, monthly deflation was driven by lower prices of airfares, perfume, rice, bird’s eye chili, mustard greens, fresh coconut milk, women’s shoes, tomatoes, broiler chicken eggs, and children’s shoes. This condition indicates that the price pattern of food commodities remains the dominant factor influencing monthly inflation in Tanjungpinang City. Comparison with Previous Years Compared to the same period last year, August 2025 y-on-y inflation of 1.23 percent was lower than August 2024 (1.93 percent) and August 2023 (2.04 percent). This shows that inflation in Tanjungpinang has tended to decline over the past three years. For calendar year inflation, August 2025 recorded 0.33 percent. This figure is lower than August 2024 (0.62 percent) and August 2023 (0.78 percent). Meanwhile, August 2025 monthly inflation of 0.26 percent was higher than August 2023 (0.02 percent), and different from August 2024, which experienced deflation of 0.06 percent. This comparison shows that inflation in Tanjungpinang City tends to be stable and under control, although it continues to be influenced by fluctuations in food and energy prices, which are sensitive to weather conditions and price policies. Conclusion Overall, Tanjungpinang City inflation in August 2025 was recorded at 1.23 percent year on-year, lower than in previous years. Price increases remained concentrated in the food, beverages, and tobacco group, as well as the personal care and other services group. Meanwhile, price declines in clothing, footwear, and some household needs exerted deflationary pressure that helped contain inflation from rising further.

This development shows that the price dynamics of household needs in Tanjungpinang City remain relatively stable. Nevertheless, fluctuations in food and transportation prices continue to be important factors influencing both monthly and annual inflation. Understanding these inflation patterns is important, both for the community and the local government, to maintain purchasing power stability while supporting local economic resilience.
